3/3 Almanac

Wednesday, March 3, is 16 days before March options expire, 44 the April and 79 the May.

Blue chip stocks (SPY) closed the latest regular session at $112.20, up 0.3% from the prior close.

In total, 3.5 billion shares were traded on the three major U.S. stock exchanges, up 2.9% from Monday.

On the jump, mediawatch, rules, econ reports, portfolio and a good book...

Mediawatch: The narrative continues in the same vein as yesterday, merger activity and Greek hope. So says the AP and so says Reuters.

The Wall Street Journal, with far more plausibility, posits that traders are looking forward to Friday's major economic releases: Employment and consumer credit.

My rules allow trades in April calendar and vertical spreads.  I allow myself to trade unhedged call and put option purchases that expire in May or later. Covered calls, diagonals, iron condors and butterflies are all off the table for now.

The Greek news that's making everyone so hopeful is that the government plans to make an announcement on Wednesday outlining austerity measures. Sort of expected that, but it did make me want to rush out and buy shares in something. Anything!

The inside story of how Harry Markopolos and his team of "Fox Hounds" uncovered Bernie Madoff's $65 billion Ponzi scheme.

Econ reports include:
  • A sneak preview of Friday's employment numbers from the private company ADP, at 8:15 a.m. Eastern.
  • The Institute of Supply Management survey on non-manufacturing businesses, at 10 a.m.
  • Petroleum inventories at 10:30 a.m.
  • The Federal Reserve's survey of economic activity in all of its regions, the Beige Book, at 2 p.m.
My portfolio consists of . . .

March expiry:
  • AKS, iron condor, p19/-p20/-p25/p26
  • CAL, covered call, s/-c19
  • CSCO, iron condor, p22/-p23/-c25/c26
  • GCI, covered call, s/-c15
  • WFC, iron condor, p26/-p27/-c29/c30
