8/1 Almanac

On Monday, Aug. 1: Manufacturing index.

There are 19 trading days before the August options expire, 47 the September, 82 the October and 110 the November.

A reminder that beginning on Monday, Private Trader goes on a vacation schedule. The Almanac will resume publication on Monday, Sept. 6, the day after Labor Day.

On the jump, market stats, econ reports, and the trading calendar . . .

7/29 Top Prospects

7/29 Almanac

On Friday, July 29: GDP.

There are 22 trading days before the August options expire, 50 the September, 85 the October and 113 the November.

On the jump, market stats, econ reports, and the trading calendar . . .

August Schedule

Just as Paris shuts down tight during the month of August, as everyone flees the city for more salubrious climes, so Private Trader will be moving to an attenuated schedule for the month.

Normal posting will resume on Sept. 6, the day after Labor Day.

I've long thought that August was the stupidest month of all for active trading. Clearly, the interns are in charge on Wall Street, and they think nothing of pushing wide, counter-intuitive price swings on low volume days.

It's hard to make money in August, so I say, "Fie, inconstant month", and shall go on vacation myself.

Here's my plan:

I won't be posting Top Prospects.

I won't be post the Almanac.

I shall post Indicators.
I shall post Forex, but shall limit my scan to only the 12 most active pairs: AUD/JPY, AUD/USD, EUR/CHF, EUR/GBP, EUR/USD, GBP/CHF, GBP/JPY, GBP/USD, NZD/USD, USD/CAD, USD/CHF and USD/JPY.

The Indicators and Forex postings will be posted on an East Asian schedule shortly after London trading opens from Aug. 5 through Aug. 22, after midnight Eastern U.S. time.

I won't be posting at all on my two travel days: Aug. 4 and Aug. 23, and their may be additional missed days.

In terms of my personal market activity, I shall trade currencies, which I can easily do on an Asian time schedule. Otherwise, it's all sand and saké.

7/28 Top Prospects

There were an unusually large number of parabolic sar phase changes, more than a third of them involving trades out of the Swiss franc. 7/21 Top Prospects

Three breakouts beyond the 55-day price channel among the 600+ stocks and exchange traded funds I screened, all with weak trends. Most of the stocks, by far, are blocked from consideration by my earnings rule: No trades within 30 days of the announcement.

Lots of parabolic sar phase changes, though, including a bunch of sector exchange-traded funds covering interest-sensitive finance and utilities, health care, tech (yesterday), consumer staples and consumer discretionary. (See my posting about a strategy I'm trying based on the parabolic sar.)

This is not a portrait of an economy sinking into renewed recession as a result of the debt crisis. I think the markets, all in all, have concluded that Congress will take action sufficient to stave off a downgrade in sovereign debt.

Parabolic sar phase changes:
