3/17 Almanac

Wednesday, March 17, is 3 days before the last trading day of March options, 31 the April and 66 the May.
Blue chip stocks (SPY) closed the latest regular session at $116.41, up 0.08% from the prior close.

In total, 3.1 billion shares were traded on the three major U.S. stock exchanges, up 10.7% from the day before.

On the jump, mediawatch, rules, econ reports, portfolio and a good book...

Mediawatch: It would have been easy to predict that today's Big Narrative would be that stocks did something or didn't do anything "after" the Fed did something or didn't do anything new. And so it was.

In this case, stocks rose the tiniest fraction after the Fed, as they have done for many, many months before, said they would keep rates low. No much movement for not much news.

AP's totally predicable verson. And Reuters'.

It's not that it's wrong, exactly. It's just not useful. And it's boring.

Boring!

Bo-ring!!!

New this week, from the author of Liar's Poker, a look inside the Doomsday Machine.

Econ reports:
  • The producer price index at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. The more influential consumer price index will be released on Thursday.
  • Petroleum inventory stats at 10:30 a.m. The main influence here is on energy-related shares.
My rules allow trades in April covered calls, iron condors and butterfly, calendar, diagonal and vertical spreads.  I allow myself to trade unhedged call and put option purchases that expire in May or later.

My portfolio consists of . . .

March expiry:
  • AKS, iron condor, p19/-p20/-p25/p26
  • WFC, iron condor, p26/-p27/-c29/c30
Shares for dividends: AOD, NLY.

Zombie shares: MCO, PALM.

My main task this week will be to unravel the remaining March positions. Also, I need to look at adding April positions. I'm uncomfortable with the current market; too many "whippy" signals.

The great strength of being a private trader is that I don't have to trade if things don't feel right. It's my decision.

Good trading!
