AOD Watch

Former primo dividend play Alpine Total Dynamic Dividend Fund (AOD) is showing bull phase on Person's Proprietary Signal on the second up-day in a row.

The yield fell from primo to pretty good as a result of the euro-zone debt crisis, and the price followed for a 36% capital loss. At a 12.7% annual yield, it will take some work to get this fund back into the first ranks.

But it could come back. Management's reduced dividend covered three months, through September. That leaves it open for a raised dividend in October and thereafter.

The euro-zone debt crisis has largely been contained, facilities are in place to keep Greece from going bankrupt and selling the Parthenon on eBay. So a higher dividend could be in the works, or not.

The stock is up 3.4% intra day on higher volume, so clearly someone out there is getting excited on the buy side.

However, the stock is trading below the 20-day moving average and way below the 200-day moving average. This is a stock that must gain nearly 50% to reach its level before the fall. That's a tough goal to attain.

On the Person's chart, the rise drove the price through the midline on the weekly pivots chart.

Bottom line: I own this stock. I got hammered by the fall. I think it will recover some of price loss over time, meanwhile, I can still collect a middlin' decent dividend. So, contrary to all of my rants against the evils of buy and hold, I bought and I'm holding.

Do I recommend that anyone open a new bull position now? Not one bit. Maybe once it has persistently broken above $5.50, the more-or-less top of its present trading range.
